| Are we Living in the Metaverse? |
Practically saying we are still not living in the Metaverse yet, but we are currently living in the Metaverse from a point of view. It’s not the first time we are hearing this word, the term Metaverse has been spoken a lot. Back in 1992 long ago we find the Metaverse in the novel "Snow Crash" written by Neal Stephenson. Then we find it again in the novel "Ready Player One" by Ernest Cline. The term was dictated as the future where our physical world will be merged with our digital world and whether you accept it or not you've to live within it.
Is it so easy to build the Metaverse?
Many big technology companies are working day and night to make this happen but facing a lot of failures as well. Creating the Metaverse is not an easy task. It’s the convergence of Virtual Reality, Augmented Reality, Advanced web Internet, Artificial Intelligence, Internet of Things [IoT], and Machine Learning. So you can see it’s a tough task to build our future, the proper Metaverse. But definitely, we’re heading towards it and very soon we’ll see ourselves living day and night inside the Metaverse.
Facebook is also not behind in this matter. Mr. Mark Zuckerberg is claiming to build Facebook as a Metaverse Company rather than a social media company. Although it was not a normal social media company, it was actually a data company; anyway keeping that part for a later topic we can expect that he’s eager to enter Metaverse very soon.
After Mark’s statements, Metaverse has become the hot word right now. People are searching more for what’s the Metaverse and what’s going to actually happen with Metaverse! There are still some people out there who are not so familiar with present technologies, now think what’s going into their minds after hearing the Metaverse concept. Build the proper Metaverse can take time, but acquiring it understand it, and use it correctly for the general people can take a lot more time.
Then how we can think that we’re living in Metaverse?
Technologies have been evolving so much with time. See the smartphones are regularly becoming more technically advanced. There are new concepts; new matters are coming into our web world. Daily you can get news of some sort of technical inventions. The whole approach is to transform our lives into a digital world.
After the Covid19, people are relying more on digital technologies than before. Education is carrying through online mode. Office meetings, works are happening remotely. The same workload is transferred into work from home basis. People are using various apps to work remotely. Children are using various apps for their daily classes and examinations also. People are connecting more with each other through online chatting apps. Social media use has been increased after the lockdowns.
So people are gradually relying more on the digital world. Keeping the physical distances in the mind, it’s now better to get closer virtually on digital mode. Isn’t it? Housewives are opening their mom blogs more than before. Teachers are now uploading their lectures on YouTube. Shop owners are now selling products online basis. A painter can create his arts digitally and sell them online too, etcetera.
Can you be more specific?
Okay, you may take an example of a guy having his Facebook account, who enjoys doing regular social networking. In his real world, he’s a 9 to 5 job worker living a boring life with his acquaintances. But in his Facebook account, he’s using the display picture as a Samurai warrior. Changes his name with that persona, curate his about according to the Samurai image.
Not just these, he regularly used to post images of samurai attacks, swords, ancient stories, how to defend yourself using karate, and etc. Actually that 9 to 5 job worker represents himself as a Samurai hero in his Facebook account. His followers and online friends took him also that way. So, is this not similar to the concept of Metaverse? The guy is living another persona on his Facebook account. He’s having a different life in his online world.
It’s not a story of one guy; rather you may find millions of individuals having similar stories – living a different person in their online world. In the Metaverse, you can represent yourself virtually in a three-dimensional space having a cartooned avatar. You can do other things in your virtual world, you can work differently, and you can live a different life in your virtual world. So there are similarities that can make you think you’re already living in Metaverse, maybe it’s not proper but pretty much the same.
I can also tell you more instances like, consider from your kid’s point of view. After the pandemic restrictions the school went off, kids cannot play with each other on the ground, they cannot visit parks with their friends, they cannot go shopping with other kids, and so on. But using Oculus headsets they can be together in their virtual worlds. They can play with other kids on digital playgrounds, meet up with new kids in virtual schools, and go shopping in virtual malls. It’s a nicer world to them where they can still get some enjoyments not in real but in digital mode.
Final Words:
I think the future is going to be nice where people can live as they want to live in real life. They can forget about their pains, about their sorrows in the digital world. I think they can reunite with their lost ones virtually in their own digital worlds. From this scenario you may find it better, there’s a chance of reducing pains, anxiousness, sorrows, desires, and something more. Today’s social media platforms giving us that opportunity quite a bit, so you can say that not fully but partially you’re already living in the Metaverse. What’s your thought on this?
